I’m pretty excited after
yesterday’s announcement that the Rocky community would be treated to a NBL
pre-season game, thanks to the University, Rockhampton Regional Council,
Rockhampton Basketball and JETGO, coming together to deliver this special event
at the CQUniversity Community Sports Centre. The Cairns Taipans and Townsville
Crocs will be battling it out in a grudge match in central Queensland on
Friday, 18 September and I can’t wait!
For those who follow me on
Twitter, know that I am a complete basketball tragic. Its great game and the
teams in the NBL are very active in their communities, inspiring young kids to
lead healthy lifestyles and do well at school. I’ve seen this community
engagement firsthand thanks to our sponsorship of the Cairns Taipans. In fact,
it was the work that the Taipans do in Far North Queensland communities that inspired
the decision to become naming rights sponsor of the team.
I’m really proud that the University
is able to host this match and think it’s great that several organisations came
together, in a short period of time, to organise the logistics and bring a
national sporting event, to the local community. This will no doubt be a
highlight of the Rockhampton sporting calendar this year and more importantly
will be an affordable event for families to attend and enjoy.
This just goes to show that as
well as delivering classes universities can also deliver other value-add
activities to boost to their local community and give something back to the
regions that support them!
We are a national university
based here in Rocky and it is fantastic that our support of a national sporting
team allows us to bring an event like this to our home town. Go the Taipans!
